Why Is My Air Handler So Loud?
Q: Why is my indoor air handler suddenly making loud or unusual noises?
A: Air handlers normally make a soft “whooshing” sound as air moves through the system. If yours is rattling, humming, squealing, grinding, or banging, something is out of place—most often a blower issue, a loose panel, or a motor/electrical problem.
1. Rattling or Vibrating Panels
If the access doors aren’t tightly latched, the blower’s vibration can make panels rattle loudly.
- Check that the front and side panels are fully seated and latched.
- Loose screws and brackets can also vibrate against the cabinet.
Florida note: In humid garages and closets, metal panels can loosen over time as the unit cycles and materials expand/contract.
2. Squealing or High-Pitched Noises
Squealing or a high-pitched whine often points to the blower assembly, such as:
- Worn blower bearings
- A failing blower motor
- An unbalanced blower wheel
If the squeal gets louder over days or weeks, schedule service before the motor fails completely.
3. Loud Humming or Buzzing
A loud hum can indicate an electrical or motor-start issue, including:
- A weak or failing capacitor (in systems that use one)
- Motor starting problems
- Control board, relay, or electrical connection issues
If the air handler hums but airflow is weak or inconsistent, turn the system off and request service.
4. Banging or Thumping
Banging, thumping, or a rhythmic “whomp” can happen when something is contacting the blower wheel or the wheel is damaged.
- Debris or a loose insulation piece inside the cabinet
- A cracked blower wheel
- A loose mounting bracket
Safety note: If you hear banging or anything that sounds like metal hitting metal, turn the system off to prevent further damage.
5. When to Call Beacon
If the noise is loud enough to hear from another room—or if it suddenly changed—it’s time for a diagnosis. Beacon’s friendly technicians in the yellow polo shirt can inspect the blower wheel, motor, capacitor, and duct connections to find the cause and restore normal, quiet operation.
We’ll see how Beacon can help.
